What's it really like?

I’m an excellent driver, so I will make the perfect 'Driving Instructor'

(common myth)

Most of us assume it’s a care free occupation using a skill we already have...“DRIVING”
I’ve been driving for years without any accidents or convictions.

Becoming a Driving Instructor is only partly about being a great driver.

Being a Driving Instructor is predominately about teaching and coaching.

It should be recognised as that and will require all the necessary skills associated with such a role.

What type of skills do you need?

driving ins

Excellent Communication Skills - Which means being able to
deliver instruction and guidance to your pupil in a potentially stressful environment.

Observational skills - Recognising mistakes or errors of
judgement and correcting these mistakes in an appropriate and professional manner.

Motivation & rapport - After all you are usually in a "one-to-one" situation and from the outset you will need to develop a professional and trusting relationship to ensure your student wants to continue
to train with you.

There are numerous other traits which go into making a good driving instructor, the point is, that what you are considering is not just a driving job, but a teaching career.

Now you have established what being a driving instructor is about;

If it still sounds like the career for you, then your next 2 questions might be...

1) What is the process of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)?

2) Do I need qualifications before I apply to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor?
At the moment you do NOT need any prior qualifications to start training

Can I really earn 30/40k

per year?

These figures are not impossible, they depend on your location, business skills and the amount of hours you are prepared to work.

However, a newly qualified instructor working in most parts of the UK is more realistically looking at around the 20k - 25k per annum in profit.
